As a progressive and forward-thinking business, we have become a source of excellence in the animal life cycle in a number of respects, including but not limited to the work of the Buitelaar Technical Team (a dedicated team of calf specialists), trials and collaborative research and new product development. The business' passion for excellent livestock welfare has previously received recognition in the form of The Good Calf Award in 2019 by Compassion in World Farming.

Recent Achievements

To date, Buitelaar's work with British Rose Veal and Beef, has seen:

The dramatic reduction in the culling of dairy bull calves within the UK
The launch of the High Health Units – Buitelaar designed calf housing created to promote a high health status, enhance protection from disease and alleviate space on TB restricted farms
The reduction of antibiotic use within the supply chain, replacing antibiotics with natural products where possible, whilst maintaining our high welfare standards
The establishment of full traceability throughout the Buitelaar supply chain, enabling the ability to trace each animal back to the farm of origin

Research

As the connecting link between farmers and consumers, Buitelaar are open to hearing of new research-driven opportunities. In the past, work in this area has come in many formats, such as on-farm support and collaborative trials, however our Development Farm, acquired in 2019, offers vast opportunity for research and development, on-farm trials and extensive education and demonstration. New Product Development

More recently, investment into new product development has seen the innovative design of the High Health Units brought to life, using 50 years of calf rearing knowledge and experience by the late Tim Walwin. This innovative design of flexible and free-standing calf housing was designed with improved farm animal welfare in mind to create the ultimate environment for the young animal. It is therefore, also ideal for alleviating space restrictions during TB breakdowns on dairy farms, owing to the simple connection of prefabricated modules and quick erection element.
