OUR FIRST FULLY-FLEDGED 2021 GRADUATE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETES LIVESTOCK SCHEME

Last year saw the launch of our long-anticipated Graduate Schemes for both Commercial roles and Livestock Buyer schemes.

Following six months of intensive training, we’re incredibly pleased to announce that our first fully-fledged Graduate has successfully completed the Graduate Livestock Scheme.

Read more about Robbie’s journey on the scheme below.

‘I’m originally from Scarborough in North Yorkshire and have an agricultural background in both arable and beef farming. Following my degree in Agriculture and Farm Business Management at Newcastle University, I decided to apply for the Graduate Livestock Scheme at Buitelaar. Coming into the dairy and the calf industry was all new to me, but I’m finding it very interesting and I’m loving every minute of it!

My induction at Buitelaar was very busy, with exposure to all areas of the business; from Customer Care, to working at the Development Farm down in Somerset. A large proportion of my time following the induction was spent with the buyers, where I was gaining experience out on farm and in the Collection Centres. This was great because it enabled me to get to grips with the whole process. For me, it was the best place to learn more about calves and what to look for when buying. Having a background in agriculture goes a long way in this role; it has really enabled me to understand the entirety of the business.

I’ve been so lucky to work with such ambitious and experienced people in the business. It has made me feel far more confident as I go forward in my new role. The team are so supportive and encouraged me to ask plenty of questions - I have learnt that there is no silly question at Buitelaar!

Following completion of the scheme, I’m now a fully-fledged Livestock Buyer! I spend every Monday at the Wrexham collection centre, working with the calves that come through, but otherwise I’m out buying on farm.

There have been many amazing moments for me on this journey but buying my first calf was a real highlight!

I’m hoping my greatest achievement is yet to come, but my proudest moment so far was getting onto the Graduate Scheme and starting a full-time role!

My one piece of advice for the new Graduates this year would be to ask plenty of questions and get stuck in!”

At Buitelaar we’re fully supportive of all students and graduates wanting to break into the industry, which is why we offer a variety of different work experience, placements, and graduate schemes throughout all business areas.
